AACC is a tenure granting institution. Any candidate hired as a full-time faculty member may be eligible to apply for tenure in the future based on institutional eligibility requirements. This position requires regular in-person presence on campus or at alternative locations, depending on class schedule and other assigned duties. Flexible teaching schedules may be available based student need. AACC offers daytime, evening, weekend classes, hybrid and online classes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Anne Arundel Community College seeks a full-time Instructor or Assistant Professor in History, with a dedication to excellence in teaching, as well as an established commitment to include a sense of inquiry, critical thinking, and anti-racism both in and out of the classroom.

A strong history candidate will have a graduate education in history, along with a proven ability to teach foundational history courses offered at AACC, including Western Civilization, World Civilization, and American History.

As a member of the department of History, Philosophy, and Political Science, the ideal candidate will be eager to demonstrate and grow their leadership skills, along with being prepared to work towards assuming a leadership role in the department. Candidates should be also committed to student-centered, outcomes-based education with experience incorporating multiple instructional strategies and the use of technology in teaching and learning.

Additionally, candidates should be proven team-players with an ongoing commitment to personal and professional development as well as the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. This position will require face-to-face teaching each fall and spring semester.

Responsibilities:
• Thirty faculty load hour annual contract taught during fall and spring terms – including face-to-face, online or hybrid instruction and instruction at off-site locations (including high schools) depending on student need
• Six office hours per week during the fall and spring terms which may include student advising and mentoring
• Teaching and assessing student learning
• Professional development
• Department, school and college/community service

In addition to a faculty member’s primary responsibilities, the exceptional candidate will also demonstrate commitment and experience in one or more of the following areas:
1. Mentoring students from target groups; new full-time or part-time faculty
2. Designing, formatting and delivering curriculum for all learning modalities
3. Training and consulting for workforce initiatives (e.g., for public and corporate partners, etc.)
4. Developing and implementing community education and extended learning programs
5. Partnering with colleagues to enhance services to students and the community
6. Recruiting and marketing
7. Devising retention strategies and activities
8. Establishing and strengthening relationships and collaborative activities including K-12 and baccalaureate-granting colleges

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in History
• Two years of full-time college teaching or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

• Earned doctorate in History or related field
• Experience teaching and/or ability to teach Western Civilization 1 & 2, World Civilization 1 & 2, American History 1 & 2, and African American History
• Demonstrated commitment to open access community college education
• Experience developing and teaching courses in multiple modalities, including online and online synchronous
• Desire to grow leadership skills and assuming leadership roles at the department and collegiate level
• Bilingual or other language proficiency.
