Position Summary

The Dental Lab Assistant assists the instructional staff in implementing clinical skill competencies; actively participates in clinical evaluation and supervision of skills/simulation experience, and evaluation of student achievement including formative and summative evaluation. Primary functions include: working directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects initially introduced by the teacher in clinical areas; observing students and assessing their progress; setting and reinforcing objectives for students; having a strong understanding of the topics to be taught; ongoing mentoring and attention to the continued needs of the students and preparing students to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board Radiation Health and Safety certification exam.

Pay dates occur on the 7th and 22nd of each month. If those dates fall on a weekend, the pay date occurs on the Friday prior to the 7th and 22nd.

In the best interest of the College, only individuals who are residents of Maryland or one of the following states will be eligible for employment at the college: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. The college will annually review this restriction and, if appropriate, expand the list of states of employment eligibility.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Ability to evaluate and assess students make informed clinical decisions in real world scenarios.
• Collaborate and consistently communicate with the course professor and/or program coordinator for implementation of weekly objectives.
• Effectively uses technology tools such as Canvas
• Evaluate performance of learning outcomes
• Enforces appropriate rules and expectations of students in clinical, lab, or simulation that comply with AACC Apprenticeship and Applied Learning department’s policies and procedures
• Provide timely feedback to students of their clinical performance
• Complete the formative and summative assessment accurately
• Submits all the required clinical forms to the course coordinators including the Formative & Summative Directed Lab Evaluation forms
• Responsible and accountable for supervising students in a laboratory setting for respective course(s)
• Assesses learning by evaluating competency with return demonstrations.
• Sign, date, and provide feedback for each student skills checklist as required
• Encourages students to meet acceptable performance standards and objectives as defined in course syllabi and by state guidelines
• Before each lab, set up all student stations with supplies.
• Monitor and assist with student skills throughout the lab.
• Maintain supplies as needed.
• Clean up and put away unused supplies at the end of each lab, including wiping down the tables and counter tops, emptying trash, returning dental equipment to the storage area.
• Work closely with lead dental assisting instructor and program coordinator to ensure lab is properly stocked, maintained, and up to date.
• Report any supply items that are running low to be ordered in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications:

Must have a current DANB RHS certification with 2-years clinical experience in a dental office, OR a current licensed hygienist with at least 1-year relevant experience in a dental office.

Must have current active DANB RHS certification OR be a current active licensed hygienist
Have 2 years of clinical experience practicing as a dental assistant in a dental office or 1-year clinical experience as a hygienist in a dental office.
Have at least 1 year trainer experience
Previous teaching experience is preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of clinical experience and proficiency in dental assisting skillset and clinic procedures in a dental office is required.
Current CPR certification
High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

Proven organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously, with attention to detail and deadlines, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
High level of competency in computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets, proficiency in Microsoft Office and Canvas is preferred.
Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, to accommodate the department's needs.
Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to communicate with students tactfully and effectively, faculty, staff, governmental agencies, and the public.
