Position Summary

This position assists students in the resolution of emotional issues and provides tools to support the achievement of academic success. The licensed counselor is responsible for providing students with short-term counseling and referrals for issues related to academic performance, crisis intervention, self-help resources, and access to a variety of outreach activities. The position is also responsible for delivering psycho-educational programs to faculty and staff, as well as providing consultation services. This position provides both face-to-face and virtual services. It acts as a liaison to county agencies and organizations to secure appropriate referrals to meet student needs. This position collaborates with other engagement and high-impact practices on campus to increase retention and pathways to completion for all students. The counselor will participate in success strategies designed to eradicate achievement gaps, with an emphasis on equity and sustained academic achievement. The expectation for this position is for the counselor to support the student in personal issues that may be impacting academic success

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Counseling: Provide short-term counseling and referral services for students experiencing developmental and/or emotional problems affecting academic performance. Assess for students' safety to self and others.

Follow "best practices" procedures to document all counseling sessions including presenting problems, safety assessment, observe mental status, and history/prior treatments. Document any contact regarding a students mental health or presenting concerns including phone calls, emails, face-to-face and virtual consults.

Provide crisis intervention services for students. Mobilize toward student's location if necessary or be available for immediate consultation with student to assess for safety to self and others and any necessary referrals to county crisis units. Arrange transport for immediate evaluation and treatment in a safe environment for the student. This includes completing documentation of behaviors, impression, mental status, and facts related to the decision-making process to ensure safety to self and others.
Provide faculty and staff outreach, consultation, and support to AACC faculty/staff/BAT team regarding questions and mental health services available to students. Develop and present psycho-educational workshops.

Facilitate wellness and classroom workshops for students on such topics as QPR Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training, stress management, test anxiety, transitions and grief, guided relaxation, and successful communication. Serve as a liaison to other student service departments in implementing outreach programming.

Meet with Homeless/Unsupported and at-risk youth as referred by Financial Aid to determine if the student meets the criteria as outlined by the Department of Education and NAFSAA to obtain adequate financial support. Support the student with their needs, inform them of available resources, and maintain appropriate documentation and record keeping.

Participate in case consultation meetings and attend professional development seminars and workshops to acquire mandated CEU's and maintain licensure (LCPC or LCSW-C) from the State of Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene.

Maintain liaisons with Anne Arundel County services and various mental health agencies to ensure outreach and referral sources to students in need of assistance for long-term counseling and/or other basic needs (i.e. housing, food, medical services, etc)

Administrative: Complete administrative responsibilities including general correspondence, supervision of student worker, monthly report, annual goals, and updating internal operating manual of policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree

Licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Hygiene

Minimum 2 years experience working with crisis management

Working knowledge of mental health issues, counseling theories, and student development theories

Excellent oral/written/communication skills

Proficient in Microsoft and master student information systems technology

Preferred Qualifications:

Counseling experience in post-secondary community college setting

Experience with electronic record-keeping for mental health

Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
